UK Health Radio Medical News Update on the Hour – Gracie on Dandruff

UK Health Radio Medical News Update on the Hour –

Dandruff

Dandruff is common; its estimated that half of all people will get it in their lives.

Dandruff causes you to see grey and white flakes of dead skin in the scalp or hair. If you wear dark clothes you can see the flakes where they fall onto your shoulders. Also your scalp may feel itchy and dry.

You can
t catch dandruff from other people. But its caused when the skin on your scalp grows back faster than it should.

Other causes of dandruff include:
Stress
Not washing your hair enough,
Washing your hair to much,
Using other hair products such as hair gel or hairspray,
Very hot or cold weathers,
Having a weak immune system.

The main treatment for dandruff is to use anti-dandruff shampoo. Anti-dandruff shampoos include chemicals such as zinc pyrithione, salicylic acid and selenium sulfide which make them work.

I used to get dandruff quite a lot and even though I dont have it anymore I still use anti-dandruff shampoo to stop it coming back.

There are different types of anti-dandruff shampoo in supermarkets. I use Head and Shoulders.

If treatment doesn’t work to clear your flaky scalp after 2 weeks, you should see your doctor for stronger treatment.
