UK Health Radio Medical News Update – On the Hour - Gracie on head lice

UK Health Radio Medical News Update – On the Hour

 Head lice

Head lice are tiny brown insects that live on human hair and glue their eggs to lots of strands of hair. They are very common, especially in young children. Head lice are not fussy if the hair is clean or dirty, so it is not kind to make fun of people for having them as even the coolest kid can get them. Head lice cannot fly or jump but they can crawl from one scalp to another in 30 seconds. They are annoying. I had them recently and my head was really itchy. I itched it so much there was scratch marks on my scalp.

In most cases, itching is the main symptom of head lice. You can treat head lice at home by wet combing the hair using a head lice comb or by using a special medicated lotion. I used both of those treatments. It took a few weeks but it worked. Its not always easy to prevent head lice infestations because they spread by head to head contact. The best way to avoid getting them is to keep long hair tied back and to get parents to check for them often and treat if needed.
