STI's and the over 50's
The incidence of sexually transmitted infections
has increased dramatically over the past 10 years according to statistics. But not, as you might imagine in the younger
more reckless age groups. Now those presenting
with problems ‘down below’ are more likely to be the over 50’s. With money and time to travel and with
unwanted pregnancy being largely of no concern to this group, it seems that
sexually transmitted disease is sending quite a few in the older age group to
the doctor for treatment along with a top up of their statins and arthritis
meds. This is a group that until more recent history has largely been
untroubled by sexually transmitted disease but now as their life styles allow
them to travel more freely and with divorce in this age group becoming more
common, promiscuity and generally throwing caution to the wind it seems is the
new middle/old age! Gone are the old
days of growing old by the fire with the pipe and slippers to hand. Now it seems that partying and recapturing
lost youths or maybe even kicking over the traces for the first time in their
lives have become more the norm! As summer
approaches and we all think about enjoying a break or maybe as older travellers
consider where they will be spending the winter this year, it might be worth
making sure that along with the sun screen and Sanatogen, some condoms find
their way into suitcases.
