Depression affects people in different ways and can cause a wide variety of symptoms.
The symptoms of depression can be different for some people. But normally if you are depressed, you feel sad, hopeless and lose interest in things you used to enjoy.
The symptoms go on for weeks or months and are bad enough to get in your way with your work, social life and family life. There are many other symptoms of depression and you don't get all of them. These include: keep being in a low mood, feeling sad or hopeless, not comfident in yourself, tearful, not enjoying things, feel worried or anxious, having suicidal thoughts or thoughts of self-harm.
There is no single cause of depression. You can develop it for different reasons and it has many different triggers.
Sometimes, when people are depressed they find it hard to imagine that treatment can actually help. But the sooner you get treatment, the sooner your depression will go away. Treatment for depression usually involves a combo of medicines, talking therapies, counciling and self-help.
